OPINION

Dear Ms. Streep,

By Antonio M. Acosta               Jan. 10, 2017

After taking a few days to digest the stupidity that came out of your mouth, during your acceptance speech at the Golden Globes Awards a few days back, I took some time and gathered some thoughts.

For all the problems we have in our country, which include the murder rates in our largest cities, our national debt of almost $20 trillion, massive unemployment in certain areas of the country, the huge drug epidemic that’s sweeping our neighborhoods and poisoning our youth and the close to 50 million Americans on government assistance and that’s just to name a few.  You don’t want to go into the decrepit state of our military and state of race relations.  Besides all these real problems, you have the fortitude to use the pulpit the “American people” have allowed you to have, by supporting your “art,” to insult most Americans.  Ok, the Constitution gives you every right to say whatever you want.  Who am I to judge.  But it also gives me the right to say whatever I want about your idiotic and absurd statements regarding Martial Arts and football fans.

What lights my fuse is that you also took this opportunity to take a huge dump on millions of Americans, ‘your servant being one of them,’ and lecture us about what is or is not art.  To lecture us on what should entertain or not entertain us.  Well, thank you, madam, for today I’m more enlighten by your wisdom.

What you Ms. Streep are saying, is what President Obama said in 2008 about most Americans.  That we don’t know any better and that we should just cling to our guns and religion.  That we don’t know how things work, we can’t figure out what is bad or good for our kids, that we’re too stupid, but I’m sure that you and your Hollywood friends do.  What you’re saying is that all of us who voted for Trump, are racists, ignorant fools.  You’re saying that since we don’t live in New York or Chicago or Los Angeles, we don’t attend Broadway plays, and fashion shows, and symphonies or other cultural events deemed fine arts, so we just watch brute events.  You’re saying that we don’t know what art is.  You’re saying that we are so narrowed minded and stupid that we only get entertained by violent sports like football and MMA.  That’s what you’re saying.

You’re saying that because we voted for Trump, we must be stupid.  Because only stupid people could vote for him and not Her.

I have seen a couple of films in which you have acted.  I think you’re a fine actor.  I also think you should think twice before insulting a large swath of America.  After all, we’re the ones that spend our hard earned money to see your art and support your lifestyle.

If you must know why your stupid words lit my fuse, is because I was an MMA instructor in the service.  I love Martial Arts, it has been around for thousands of years.  It has been refined into many different disciplines and it’s practiced by millions around the world.  You insulted me.  I don’t like being insulted, especially by someone who doesn’t know me.

Football is a sport that requires many different talents and intelligence, it’s part of the American fabric.  Martial Arts is art.  Maybe you should take a few minutes to learn about it.
